About the National Science Scholarship

The National Science Scholarship provides free study opportunities to students interested in science. The scholarship covers the cost of their study until completion. 

Interested applicants can apply for the scholarship at different levels: undergraduate and graduate. 

Is the Science Scholarship Open for Application?

Yes. Students can apply for the National Science Scholarship before the closing date. The scholarship is open to bright students who have a strong desire to study science and research at prestigious universities worldwide.

For Undergraduates

National Science Scholarship (BS)

The esteemed National Science Scholarship (BS) develops a young talent for a stimulating and gratifying career in scientific and technological research. It is the only scholarship in Singapore that covers your undergraduate studies and Ph.D. training.

You have the chance to engage in challenging studies across scientific areas with the NSS (BS). Explore the subjects of engineering, physical sciences, biomedical sciences, computer and information science, and more at some of the best universities in the world and learn from the brightest minds in science!

Who is Eligible for NSS (BS)?

To be eligible for the NSS (BS) scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a Singaporean citizen. If you are an international student, you must be willing to take up Singaporean citizenship. 
  • They must possess outstanding academic standing in the GCE “A” Levels (ideally with 11 AUs), the Polytechnic Diploma (ideally with Merit), or a similar degree (e.g. International Baccalaureate or NUS High School diploma)
  • Although individuals in their last year of studies are welcome to apply, they will only qualify for the scholarship if they get a GCE “A” Level or equivalent scores that satisfy A*STAR’s requirements.
  • Applicants must have applied or are currently applying for an undergraduate program in one of the fields listed under “Research Areas” at a prestigious university abroad.
  • Male scholars must complete National Service before beginning their undergraduate studies.
  • Candidates must be very interested in science and research. Candidates with experience and noteworthy accomplishments in projects and activities connected to science or math will be given preference.
  • To increase their options for undergraduate universities, applicants must take the SAT exams. And they must submit their SAT results, if available, to increase their chances of qualification while evaluating their applications overall. 

Note: A*STAR does not require a minimum SAT score as a requirement for the undergraduate scholarships offered for studies.

For Graduates

National Science Scholarship (Masters)

The National Science Scholarship (Masters) seeks to advance your research abilities and give you the necessary groundwork and a head start in your quest for a career in science.

This scholarship is your best opportunity if you’re an undergraduate with a passion for computer and information sciences, food technology, or microelectronics. You will be connected to exciting scientific and technological arenas at a prestigious international university, which will speed up your research and prepare you to enter the workforce sooner.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly overseas living allowance
  • Other allowances (Conference allowance, Thesis allowance, Computer allowance, Settling-In allowance)
  • Annual return airfare

Who is Eligible for NSS (Masters)?

To be eligible for the NSS (Masters) scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a Singaporean citizen. If you are an international student, you must be willing to take up Singaporean citizenship. 
  • They must have at least a second upper-class honors degree or the equivalent in the pertinent fields or are on pace to do so.
  • To qualify, the applicant must successfully complete at least a second upper-class honors degree or an equivalent. Thus, applicants in the last semester of their undergraduate studies are welcome to apply.
  • Have applied or plan to apply for a Master of Research (or equivalent) program in a few research fields at a prestigious international university abroad.
  • Sincerely desire a career in research

The scholarship application closes on April 1.

National Science Scholarship (Ph.D.)

The National Science Scholarship (Ph.D.) is given to deserving people who want to work in research and have a meaningful career. If your application is accepted, you will receive funding for up to five years to pursue your academic goals. This funding will start once you have finished a one-year paid research attachment at an A*STAR Research Institute.

The scholarship is for undergraduate students who have a passion for computer and information sciences, biomedical sciences, physical sciences, or engineering.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly sustenance allowance, inclusive of CPF contribution (where applicable)
  • Monthly overseas living allowance
  • Other allowances (Conference allowance, Thesis allowance, Computer allowance, Settling-In allowance)
  • Annual return airfare

Who is Eligible for NSS (Ph.D.)?

To be eligible for the NSS (Ph.D.) scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a Singaporean citizen. If you are an international student, you must be willing to take up Singaporean citizenship. 
  • They must possess a keen interest in a career in research.
  • Applicants must possess exceptional undergraduate performance in the relevant fields (ideally, you have already earned or are on track to make a 1st class honors degree or its equivalent).
  • However, successful candidates will only be given the scholarship if they get a Bachelor’s Degree or comparable results that fulfill A*STAR’s requirements. Candidates who are currently enrolled in the last semester of their final year of undergraduate studies are encouraged to apply.
  • They must have or will be applying to a Ph.D. program at a prestigious international university.

The scholarship application closes on March 1.

How to Apply for NSS

  1. Go to the A*STAR scholarship application portal.
  2. Select Scholarships.
  3. Open the scholarship for which you want to apply.
  4. Go to Application Procedure.
  5. Click on the application link.
  6. Log in with your Singpass.
  7. Apply for the scholarship 
  8. Submit.
